Total’s CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, kept a low profile during his visit to Algiers on 27 January 2019 where he met Kamel-Eddine Chikhi, CEO of Sonatrach at the time. The aim was to discuss the French oil giant’s operations in the country where it extracts nearly 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.

For the time being Total’s presence in Algeria is relatively small compared to Angola, Nigeria and the Congo, the company’s three preferred countries in Africa. However, that could change if the French major finalises its acquisition of Anadarko’s assets on the continent.
