Unitel Arbitration: Isabel dos Santos takes a knock in the British Virgin Islands

A judge in the British Virgin Islands has rejected arguments from Isabel dos Santos’ Vidatel intended to challenge a 2019 arbitration decision forcing it to pay more than $600m to Portugal’s PT Ventures. The case, brought against the shareholders of Angolan telephone operator Unitel, will be examined in Paris in early December.

In his 13 August 2020 decision, to which Jeune Afrique Business+ has had access, British Virgin Islands commercial law judge Adrian Jack did not accept either of the two arguments put forward by Vidatel that sought to challenge the February 2019 arbitration ruling made by a panel appointed by the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce.
