Former American Tower chiefs storm Africa’s telecom towers business

A group of former managers of the American giant is targeting emerging countries and has signed its first highly symbolic operation: the takeover of Airtel towers in Tanzania.

The takeover illustrates the appetite of the newcomer to the world of African telecom tower networks. Paradigm Infrastructure Limited (Paradigm), in cahoots with the American SBA Communications based in Florida, purchased the assets of Airtel Africa in Tanzania for $175 million. The two entities created a joint venture to absorb the 1 400 units owned by the Africa branch of Indian telecommunications giant Bharti Airtel.
